Playwright Statement
I began writing this play 3 years ago with one thought: 80% of what’s on the internet is gossip. I didn’t read that on the internet, just my own hunch that started this creation.
At the time – and still – there was a lot of focus on technology’s responsibility. My focus was more on the human behavior, so the ancient phenomenon of “gossip” intrigued me.
To anchor the play in that behavior I chose 1999 as time period, just before the explosion of social media.
While the play was originally set in the Hudson Valley, an opportunity in Galway to develop the work inspired a new setting: a small Irish town convulsed in conspiracy.
The result is a truly theatrical journey in another place and time, reminding us of the humanity beneath the problems of today.
